Do you believe that a five-year-old girl can bear a child? On a scientific point of view, it’s called precocious pregnancy. It’s quite odd, and as far as we know, Lina’s case was something that puzzled even medical experts. It stood out among any other. It’s very rare. Just imagine, how can a very young immature body be able to bear a child? Well, it’s beyond what is natural, but that’s what happened in Peru in 1939 when Lina Medina gave birth to a baby boy which they named Gerardo Medina.
Lina Medina was born on September 27, 1933 in Ticrapo, Peru. Her parents were Tiburelo Medina and Victoria Losea. Seeing her abnormal abdominal size, her parents brought her to the hospital for a check up. They were so afraid thinking that she might have a tumor growing inside her stomach. Her doctor, Dr. Gerardo Lozada, told her parents the truth that she was actually pregnant. She was then brought to Lima for further analysis by other specialists only to confirm that she was really pregnant. Lina was only five years old when she started getting pregnant.
After more than a month from her original diagnosis, Lina delivered a baby boy by a caesarean section on May 14, 1939. The procedure was necessary because she had a small pelvis. Lina had been reported to menstruate at the age of 3 and had prominent breast development at 4. Lina, at the age of five, displayed advanced pelvic structure. And while the doctors was having the caesarean delivery, they’ve found out that at a very young age, she had mature sexual organs typically seen at puberty.
Gerardo Medina, Lina’s son, was named after her doctor, Gerardo Lozada. The baby boy weighed 2.7 kg and was raised to be Lina’s brother. At 10 years of age, Gerardo soon found out that Lina was his mother. He died at the age of 40 from a bone marrow disease in 1979.
Rumors spread as to who really impregnated Lina. Of course, if someone is pregnant, it’s but natural to ask or find out who the child’s father is. There had been speculations that her own father might had been the one who sexually molested her, so her father was arrested for that same suspicion. Due to lack of concrete evidence, he was released. Gerardo’s biological father was never known.
Many speculated that Lina’s pregnancy was just a hoax, but it had always been verified. And to prove it, there were only two pictures of Lina that were kept on file. The very pertinent one was when she was at her seven and a half months of pregnancy taken in April 1939. In that picture, Lina had a close up shot naked on her side view openly showing her abdomen.
Medical experts were seemed perplexed of Lina Medina’s case. The question never ceased to linger in their minds of how a five-year-old girl developed mature sexual organs, and to top it all, got pregnant.
Lina, having been married to Raul Jurado, is now enjoying her life with their son which was born in 1972. Lina is now 81 years old.
