;
As ancient as mummification sounds, it started about a thousand in fact, around 2000 years earlier(in 5000BC) than the more known coming about in 3100 BC through the ancient Egyptians. Mummification was perfect for the purpose of preservation of the body so that- according to the beliefs, the dead people could move on to the after life, with their body in reasonably good condition.
Some other belief systems even considered having the bodies preserved andin good condition for the purpose of reincarnation where the souls could be able to return back to their own bodies.
As far as death goes, pandemics and epidemics are wide known for the killing of millions and millions of people. Unfortunately, Pneumonia, also referred to as the disease "named by the ancients", has horribly taken away the life of a young, two year old little girl from Palermo, Italy. She was named Rosalia Lombardo and was very much loved by his father, official Mario Lombardo. So much so that, he grieved after his child's death an wanted her body preserved.
Many mysteries surrounded the mummification of dear Rosalia Lombardo. Case in point that her lovely little eyes would occasionally be seen opening partially. Her body also undergone x-ray and the results showed how all her organs were remarkably intact. One other great factor was the embalmer, Alfredo Salafia whom the official Mario Lambardo had approached. He had been a professor of Chemistry and a noted embalmer and taxidermist. His formula, once advertised and sold in the United States of America was what he had used on Rosalia Lombardo's little body. And until today, that formula still remains a mystery.
Little Rosalia Lombardo can now be found kept in a small chapel at the end of the catacomb's tour and is encased in a glass covered coffin, placed on a wooden pedestal. She is also known as "The Sleeping Beauty" and that, majestically she is.
